Sale Picks: Ann Taylor Loft

One of my favorite work outfits of late consists of a pencil skirt with a tucked-in blouse, belt, and heels.  Throw on some interesting jewelry and a blazer or cardigan, and I’m ready to go.  When I saw Ann Taylor Loft was having a HUGE sale, I knew it was time to stock up on their lady-like work blouses.  (I tend to toughen the look up a bit with my accessories.)

Here are my picks:

Drapey BF Button Down (40% off $44.99)

Roll Sleeve Henley (40% off $44.99)

Chambray Boyfriend Shirt (30% off 44.50)

After imagining all of the ways I could style this dress  to make it look completely different, I had to add it to my cart.   A fitted blazer, a chunky cardigan, a long sleek belted cardigan, high boots, ankle boots, pumps, the possibilities are endless.  Dress, you are totally going into my 30 for 30.  Get ready.

Elastic Neck Dress (30% off $79.50)

Also, I have some good news!  We finally received our heavily discounted new DSLR camera and will be spending this weekend figuring out how to use it.  Should be interesting.  Patrick and I are not the most tech savvy people.  So you will soon be seeing pictures of my own wardrobe and styling remixes, along with some of my other adventures.  Hopefully, that’s a good thing.  🙂

William Rast for Target Jeans

William Rast for Target

I’ll admit it, I’m a jeans snob.  I rocked F21 and TJ Maxx jeans until one day I stumbled upon a pair of Seven for All Mankind jeans, and never looked back.  Sure, I’ll pick up a trendy pair of jeggings from F21, but I am strictly designer when it comes to my jeans.  I’ve converted several of my friends, much to their delight and chagrin.  My closet is full of Sevens, Citizens, Joes, William Rast, Paige, etc.  (I score most of them on super sale or on eBay.)  When my apartment was broken into during college, my tearful inquiry to my roommate was “Did they take my jeans?”.  Seriously.  Patrick couldn’t stop laughing.

When I heard William Rast was doing a line for Target, I was a wee bit skeptical.  Would they have the same amazing fit and quality?

My review?  Amazing. And for $49.99, you’ve just GOT to get a pair.  I texted all of my denim loving friends immediately, and two of them have already headed to Target to buy their own.  (They trust me and my jeans obsession.)

The pair I ended up with:

William Rast for Target Skinny Jeans in Medium Wash

As soon as we receive our DSLR (I’m looking at you eBay seller with the incredibly slow shipping…) I will do an outfit post that includes these jeans so you can see ’em in action.

Ringing in the New Year

*Me, on our honeymoon in CA.  Photo by my awesome husband, Patrick.

I’ve never been big on New Years Resolutions.  However, this year I have a lot of things on my mind that I would like to commit to.  I need to eliminate “I can’t” from my vocabulary and push forward with the things I want/need to do.  Here are my goals/resolutions for 2011:

  1. Really get to know and love New Orleans (discover shops, restaurants, festivals, hidden gems, etc.)
  2. Appreciate where I am in my life, and not worry so much about what’s next.
  3. Reach out to my favorite ladies more often (whether its sending care packages to Belgium, setting up phone dates with my ladies in SF/Wisconsin/Michigan, or sending emails and snail mail).
  4. Run a marathon.  I’ve done a few half marathons and I really want to at least start training for a marathon in 2011.
  5. Use my new DSLR camera (!!!) to document my little family more.  Post pictures to this blog and share my new blog with my family and friends.
  6. Personal Style:  The days where I feel comfortable in my own skin are the days where I’ve put together an outfit that feels like me.  Start documenting these outfits and posting to this blog for feedback and inspiration.
  7. 30 for 30 challenge!  I loved following some of my favorite fashion bloggers as they took this challenge.  I need to do this to push my own personal style and help me learn to love my closet.

Tights That Last

When I was a little girl I LOVED tights.  Black, white w/pink hearts, blue w/white polkadots, I had them all.  The problem was, I constantly ripped/tore/snagged them on everything.  My mom was not happy with me.

Now that tights are appropriate for women over the age of 8, my love affair has continued.  Unfortunately, so has my tight-shredding problem.

Enter Hue tights.

I cannot get enough of these tights.  They are SO soft, comfortable, and durable.  Meaning I can wear them several times without destroying them.  I’m considering buying stock in them.  My mom would be so proud.

What to Wear: Work Holiday Party (Part Two)

It’s super frustrating when you have a work holiday party coming up, and NONE of your dresses seem to be working.  Trust me, I’ve been there.  Last year I tried on about 5 different outfits and nothing was working.  My poor husband Patrick, knew better than to try to help since I was entering “outfit meltdown” territory.  It’s best to stand back when that happens.

Anyway, I’ve found the best solution is to pair something that is simple and flattering with something sparkly.  For example, last year I wore a black satin skirt very similar to these:

Gap PaperBag Skirt

F21 Jacquard Skirt

With a tucked in silky blouse, similar to these:Banana Republic Silk Ruffle Shell

J Crew Draped Sleeve Blouse (really any color will work, I’m clearly just in a pewter kind of mood)

The added bonus is the silk blouse tucked in to the skirt really defines your waist and might make you feel more confident.  Especially if you’ve entered “outfit meltdown” territory.

Then add some holiday sparkle:Nine West Escher Peep Toe (because I can’t afford the sparkly Jimmy Choos…)

F21 Collar Necklace

F21 Pearlescent Neck Piece

And there you have it!  A classic, fashion-forward, figure-flattering, holiday party outfit.  Here’s to no “outfit-meltdowns” over holiday party dressing!

What to Wear: Work Holiday Party (Part One)

Finding an outfit for an office/work holiday party can be challenging.  I’m in a supervisor role at the schools I work in, so I like to keep my outfits more modest than I would for a holiday party with friends.

Solution number one: Wear tights and killer heels with a great (affordable) dress you can wear again

Any of these (under $100!) dresses would look amazing with tights and fierce heels or booties.

Modcloth Golden Ruler Dress

F21 Zipper Lace DressF21 Brushed Satin Dress

MM Couture Embellished Draped Dress

MM Couture Chevron Silk Dress

Come back tomorrow for part 2!  (What to do when you don’t have a dress that works…)
